Hi, Have been out everyday in my little wee van.... am still loving it... but, I left it alone yesterday, then went to start it today. It was on a steep hill, pulled out the choke, started the engine....then billows and billows of white, smelly smoke As soon as I pushed the choke in, it settled down, and then was as fine as it always has been. I thought it might be that some rain got in somewhere... maybe that's wishfull thinking.
Does anyone know what may have caused this????... Have I broke it already??

Generally white smoke signifies water (or coolant) in the combustion chamber, but I couldn't say how it got in there. I wouldn't have thought it would be rain water, as it would have to get into the filter box then past the filter. This normally only happens when the van has been submerged in water or driven through a very deep puddle. If it was doing it constantly then I would have said head or head gasket trouble. Has it used any coolant? Pop the radiator cap off and check. If not then I guess it will be a case of suck it and see.

Hi, No... all fluids were the same as they were when I got the van.... all present and correct. So far, it hasn't happened again, but I went out last night.... and left it at a mates and got a lift home, so I will have a better idea when I collect it in a couple of hours. |

Seems a real mystery to me then.
Still arn't you glad you're driving something with some character about it?
I mean as well as my Rascal I have a modern Volvo V70 T5 that I've had for a couple of years, and during which nothing has ever gone even slightly wrong with it. Modern cars are so boring!

I left it for a day and half... then tried to start it and everything seems to be absolutely fine.... Maybe it was because it was parked on a steep hill for quite a while... anyway, I don't know or care....and yes, I love it. I love everything about it and a couple of my mates are seriously thinking about getting one now. It is just too cute.
I would'nt think about driving anything else.
I have yet to brave the motorway and I am for-seeing a rather chilly winter...but nothing a pair of woolly tights and a hat won't fix |

You should try the motorway though. It's not that bad. Just watch out for the gusts of wind and overtaking trucks can sometimes be a bit turbulant.
Keep it at about 60ish (50 in windy conditions) and you'll be fine.

| Hello Jenny, I think what may have happened is the oil in the rocker cover/cylinder head ran to the rear of the head & flooded no.4 valve stems which then drained into the cylinder. On start up that oil then burnt giving smelly smoke. Water problems result in steam being emitted from the exhaust which has no smell to it. I`m pleased you are enjoying your Rascal. Derek. |

Hi Derek.... I am loving it. I don't know if you remember the day you brought it to me, well my daughter turned up with the baby girls. Since that day, my baby grandaughter has been in hospital pretty much all the time. She has a real rare condition.... 1 in ten million kids get it, her immune system has turned on her brain cells and caused permanent damage. It has happened out of the blue and really shocked us all. The van has been invaluable as I have had to do loads of running around, I certainly couldn't have afforded the fuel in my old vehicle.
Am hoping to get out to Wiltshire in it for a much needed day out next week,
but yes... it is the best vehicle I have ever had.... would not want anything else now.

| Hello Jen, Sorry to hear about your grandaughter. It must be very distressing for you. One of my nieces at 13 months has been diagnosed with Angelmans Disease which is a condition where the child/adult will never mentally develop past babyhood. Again very rare. You wonder why life is so unfair. I can only wish your daughter & you strength to cope. All the best, Derek. |

Thanks Derek.... I am sorry that you too have a young child that is poorly. You are right, it does seem very unfair.... but my daughter insists that "special " children are born to special families. I thank god I have my little van, as I am organising a jumble sale to raise money for some padded equipment, and much needed other things. That little rascal has been all over hampshire picking up other peoples old clothes and junk.. it has really done me proud. |

| Great stuff. Remember, if you have any van worries/concerns I am always willing to give advice. Keep up the good work. Derek. |
